Who We Are

Dan Hageman

Dan is a field medical scientist at Bristol Myers Squibb working in immuno-oncology. While completing his Biomedical Engineering PhD in Sydney, Australia, Dan was exposed to Effective Altruism and joined the Giving What We Can community. He became interested in donation matching after learning of his employer’s generous $30K matching program and wanted to find a way to inspire others to effectively leverage their impact towards the most effective causes. His life opportunities, along with his interest in alleviating global poverty and wild animal suffering, has brought further meaning to his work and life-long goals.

Outside of his career and involvement in Match for More, Dan has four ridiculously cool siblings, is an avid reader of all things nonfiction, is a competitive table tennis player, and always 4-bets with 2-7 offsuit. Dan believes that craft beer combined with happy hour is objectively the most effective use of anyone’s time and money.

Dan favors a patient philanthropy approach with a focus on the minimization of extreme suffering.

Aaron Hamlin

Aaron is a licensed attorney with two additional graduate degrees in the social sciences. He founded multiple nonprofits serving as executive director, including The Center for Election Science. Aaron saw many effective altruism-aligned charities go underfunded and wanted to change that by getting more donors to give more effectively.

Aside from Match for More and The Center for Election Science, Aaron also does Brazilian jiu-jitsu and locksport. His favorite move is the triangle choke and his favorite locks to pick are traditional pin-tumblers, particularly Abus and American locks. Aaron also enjoys writing technical, layperson-friendly essays, which he catalogs on his personal website.

Aaron tends to prefer technical causes that offer ultra-high impact. He’s comfortable with charities that take high risk and significantly favors charities that also benefit the long-term future.
